Lignum™
Lignum Vitae, or “Wood of Life” is native to the Antilles, Central America and the West Indies, and has been used for millennia for its medicinal properties. It’s durability, strength and density once made it highly desirable for industrial applications, attributes that almost pushed this incredible tree to the point of extinction. Now a protected species, the Lignum Vitae forests are making a considerable recovery.
Our LIGNUM™ series uses root wood, personally collected in the Guatemalan forest more than 30 years ago from a Lignum Vitae grove previously harvested for industrial use. After harvesting, the stump and roots of this hardwood is often left behind and can lay in the earth for decades showing no decay, a testament to its resilience.
Lignum Vitae is impermeable to water making this beautiful wood perfect for daily wear. Lignum™ rings by SATORU are available in Platinum 950, 18K gold (Yellow, Grey or Red), and Stainless Steel.
Process
The root wood of the Lignum Vitae is the hardest part of the tree, making extremely fine milling possible. Wood and metal are turned on a lathe with care and precision. The parts are then carefully press fit together to form a unified band. The layers are secured with rivets and then hand carved into their final form.
As a symbol of strength and resilience a LIGNUM™ ring by SATORU is a subtle expression of commitment and love. Two rings, ordered as a pair, are turned from a single block epitomizing the bond between you and your loved one through this truly special material. In each unique set, the wood grain of the rings match one another perfectly, which becomes evident by placing the smaller ring on top of the larger ring with the diamonds in line and the hallmarks oriented so they can be read.
Trademark
Each custom piece features the patented AKATSUKI™ diamond and ruby setting. When the ring is removed from the finger and tilted toward a light source, the diamond, set on the outside of the ring, absorbs and reflects the saturated hue of the colored gem set behind it. To maximize the light’s passage, we use only high quality DEF/VVS diamonds, the finest colored gems and TOP RED rubies.
